Family Photos in Fishers, Indiana: Candid, Playful & Full of Personality

Family enjoying a candid portrait session outdoors in Fishers, Indiana

Looking for family photos in Fishers, Indiana that feel natural, relaxed, and genuinely like your family? At Rogue Image Photo, we believe the best family portraits aren't always the perfectly posed ones. We focus on capturing the candid moments, genuine connections, and personalities that make your family unique—while still making sure you get those beautiful portraits where everyone looks at the camera.

Family photos don't have to mean standing in a line, smiling at the camera, and hoping everyone behaves for 30 mins to an hour.

Some of the photographs you'll treasure most are the ones where your kids are laughing, your family is playing, and nobody is thinking about the camera at all.

At Rogue Image Photography, our approach to family photography is built around candid moments, genuine connection, and beautiful portraits that still feel like your family. Learn more about our family photography experience.

TL;DR: Family Photos in Fishers, Indiana

Family Photography That Feels Natural

Candid family portrait of parents playing with their children outdoors

We want your family photos to feel like your family, not somebody else's idea of what a family portrait should look like.

That means we'll absolutely create the traditional portraits where everyone looks at the camera. But we'll also let you move. Play. Laugh. Walk. Explore. Snuggle. Chase the kids.

And occasionally deal with the fact that your toddler has decided that listening to the photographer is simply not happening today.

That's okay.

Our job isn't to make your family behave like professional models.

Our job is to photograph your family as it actually is.

That might mean walking through an orchard, playing at a park, splashing through a creek, having a picnic, or even spending an afternoon at the State Fair.

Those shared experiences give us something much more meaningful to photograph than a series of perfectly posed pictures.

After more than 15 years of photographing families, we've found that some of the photographs people come back to again and again are often the ones that capture a relationship, a laugh, a little personality, or a moment they didn't even realize was happening.

That's what we want to create for you.

Family Photography Sessions for Every Family

Family posing together for professional portraits in Fishers, Indiana

Every family is different, so your photography session should be too.

Annual Family Portrait Sessions

For many of our clients, family photography becomes an annual tradition.

Some families come every fall. Others prefer spring or summer. Some families want a traditional portrait session, while others want to build the session around something their kids genuinely enjoy doing.

Our standard family sessions are available in both 30-minute and 60-minute formats.

Family Mini Sessions

Don't need a full family session?

Our themed mini sessions are designed for families who want something shorter, simple, and fun.

These sessions are generally around 20 minutes and are offered throughout the year, with seasonal themes such as fall, Christmas, sunflowers, and summer creek sessions.

They're especially popular with families who want updated photographs without dedicating an entire afternoon to a portrait session.

Extended Family Photography

Extended-family sessions are another popular option. Maybe you're photographing your parents and siblings. Maybe grandparents want photographs with all of their children and grandchildren. Maybe the entire family is getting together for a reunion. These sessions can involve 10–20 people and are a great way to document multiple generations at once.

We'll make sure you get the important combinations—everyone together, individual families, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren—while still creating plenty of natural interaction.

Our 60-minute session is required for larger and extended families.

In-Home Family Photography

Sometimes the best place for your family photos is home. In-home sessions are especially meaningful for families with young children because home is where so much of your family's real life happens. We can photograph your kids playing, reading, hanging out in their rooms, snuggling on the couch, making breakfast, or simply interacting with one another. In-home sessions require additional travel and time, so they typically have a higher investment than a standard portrait session. But for the right family, they can create some of the most personal photographs you'll ever have.

When Should You Take Family Photos?

There isn't one perfect season for family photography.

The best season depends on the look you want, your family's schedule, and the kind of experience you'd like to create.

Fall Family Photos in Fishers

Fall is our busiest season for family photography. Families love the changing leaves, comfortable temperatures, cozy clothing, and the opportunity to have updated photographs ready for Christmas cards and holiday gifts. Because fall is already a major seasonal topic, we don't need to recreate the entire fall guide here. Instead, we've created a much deeper resource specifically for families planning fall and holiday photographs in the Fishers area.

That guide goes into greater detail about fall timing, holiday planning, locations, outfits, and other seasonal considerations.

Spring Family Photos

Spring offers a completely different look—fresh greenery, blooming gardens, and softer seasonal colors. Newfields can be beautiful during this time of year, although its hours and photography requirements can vary by season. That's one reason we help clients choose locations based on their actual schedule rather than simply handing everyone the same list of parks.

Summer Family Photos

Summer is perfect for families who want their session to feel more like an adventure.

Think parks, water, creek sessions, sunflowers, outdoor activities, or even the Indiana State Fair. If your kids love running, exploring, and getting a little messy, summer can be a fantastic time for family photography.

Winter Family Photos

Winter family photography can be just as meaningful. Depending on the weather and the type of session you want, we can explore indoor locations, your home, a studio environment, or architectural locations such as the Indiana State House. Winter is also a great option for families who want something different from the traditional fall portrait.

Where Should We Take Our Family Photos?

Parents and children walking together during a candid family photo session

“Where should we do our session?” is one of the questions we hear most often. The good news is that you don't need to know. That's part of what you're hiring us for. After more than 15 years photographing families throughout Central Indiana, we've developed a pretty extensive catalog of locations—and, more importantly, we've learned which locations work for different families.

A family that wants an urban, modern feel shouldn't necessarily be put in a giant field.

A family with young, energetic kids may be happier somewhere they can move and explore.

A family bringing their dog needs a pet-friendly location. And a fall orchard session creates a completely different experience from an urban summer session.

The location should fit your family.

Our Favorite Photography Locations

We've put together a much larger guide to the locations we regularly recommend throughout Central Indiana, including options around Fishers, Carmel, Noblesville, Indianapolis, and beyond.

That guide goes much deeper into individual parks, nature locations, downtown environments, and other places that can work beautifully for family portraits.

What Should We Wear for Family Photos?

Family portraits captured during a relaxed outdoor photography session

This might be the question we hear most often.

And there's one important distinction:

Match vs. Coordinate

We recommend coordinating rather than matching.

Everyone doesn't need to wear the same shirt or identical colors.

Instead, choose a color palette that works together and let each person's clothing have its own personality.

Think about:

  • Coordinating colors

  • Similar tones

  • Textures

  • Subtle patterns

  • Comfortable clothing

  • Clothes that allow kids to move

The goal is for everyone to look like they belong together without looking like they're wearing a uniform. And remember: if your child can't comfortably move in what they're wearing, they're probably not going to enjoy the session.

What Actually Happens During a Family Photo Session?

Children playing with their parents during a natural family portrait session

This is one of the biggest questions parents have:

“What are we supposed to do for an entire hour?”

The answer is simple:

Be together.

We'll guide you when we need to.

We'll create traditional portraits.

We'll give you prompts.

We'll move around.

We'll interact with the kids.

We'll look for candid moments.

And we'll let the session unfold naturally.

You don't need to know how to pose.

Your children don't need to know how to model.

That's our job.

Your job is to spend time with your family.

Our job is to photograph it.

What If My Kids Don't Cooperate?

This might be the biggest fear parents have before family photos.

And our philosophy is simple:

Kids don't have to be perfect.

They can move.

They can laugh.

They can be silly.

They can need a break.

They can get distracted.

They can occasionally have a complete meltdown.

We'll roll with it.

The goal isn't to create an hour where every person behaves perfectly.

The goal is to create photographs that feel like your family.

And sometimes the unexpected moments end up being the photographs you love the most.

Absolutely—provided the location allows pets.

For many families, the dog is part of the family. So if your dog belongs in the photographs, we'll work to find a location where they can safely participate.

We'll also consider your dog's personality when choosing the location.

What Happens If It Rains?

Indiana weather can be unpredictable.

Depending on the session and location, we may be able to use a covered or weather-friendly location, move indoors, photograph at home, or reschedule.

That's another reason we like to plan the session together rather than simply assigning you a location.

How Far in Advance Should We Book?

For fall family photos, the earlier the better.

Fall is our busiest family photography season, and popular dates and times can fill quickly.

If you're hoping to use your photographs for Christmas cards or holiday gifts, you'll also want to leave enough time for your session, editing, printing, and delivery.

But don't assume fall is your only option.

We photograph families throughout the year, and spring, summer, winter, and seasonal mini sessions can all be fantastic.

If you already know you'd like family photos this year, reach out and start the conversation. We can help you determine the best time and location for your family.

Why Families Choose Rogue Image Photo

Extended family gathered together for a professional family portrait

There are plenty of photographers who can take a family picture.

What we want to do is build a relationship with your family.

We've been photographing families for more than 15 years, and many of the families we work with originally came to us for something completely different.

They might have started as wedding clients.

Then came an engagement session.

Then a newborn.

Then family photos.

Then another family session.

And another.

We've watched little kids grow into teenagers. We've photographed senior portraits for children we've photographed as babies. We've photographed multiple generations of the same family.

Eventually, seeing these families again feels less like another photography session and more like a reunion.

That's one of our favorite parts of this job.

We want to be the photographer you can come back to every year as your family changes.
