Indianapolis Wedding Photographer | Embracing Rain on Your Wedding Day: Why It’s More Than Just Good Luck

Updated: Jul 18

When planning a wedding, many couples dream of sunny skies and perfect weather. However, Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate, and sometimes rain becomes an uninvited guest. As a seasoned wedding photographer in Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, McCordsville, and Indianapolis, I’ve witnessed firsthand the beauty and charm that a rainy wedding day can bring.

The Old Wive’s Tale: Rain as Good Luck

You might have heard the old wive’s tale that rain on your wedding day is good luck. This belief stems from various cultural traditions. In some cultures, rain symbolizes fertility and cleansing, ensuring that the marriage will be fruitful and that any bad memories or mistakes are washed away. Another interpretation is that a wet knot is harder to untie, meaning your marriage will be stronger and longer-lasting.

Personal Experiences and Stories

I remember back a few years ago when the remnants of a hurricane (a tropical depression by the wedding day) had moved in, and it rained all day on a couple’s wedding day at a golf course. Despite the relentless rain, we were able to take some rain photos with an umbrella and flash that are truly memorable. In all honesty, these photos would not have been so remarkable had it not been for the rain. The couple's joy and resilience shone through, creating a unique and unforgettable album.

Tips and Advice for Rainy Wedding Days

1. You Cannot Predict the Weather: So stop worrying about it. Instead, prepare all options so that you are happy with how your day goes, whether it has to be inside or outside. If you’re having a backyard wedding, you need a tent. If you don't want the worry about making a decision, consider having your whole day inside at a venue like Crowne Plaza – Union Station, The Scottish Rite Cathedral, or Ritz Charles in Carmel.

2. Be Prepared: Consider having clear umbrellas (and oversized golf ones too) on hand for your guests and wedding party. This not only keeps everyone dry but also makes for some adorable and unique photo opportunities.

3. After the Rain, Comes the Rainbow: Rainbows can be the perfect backdrops for your wedding day portraits. After the rain, keep an eye out for these beautiful natural phenomena to add a touch of magic to your wedding photos.

Photographic Benefits of Rain

Here’s a little-known fact: you want it to be cloudy on your wedding day. Overcast days allow for flat light and more shooting angles. Plus, you and your guests aren’t squinting in all your photos. Water puddles make great options for unique perspectives as well! There’s a saying in photography – clouds make everything better!

Personal Touch: Philosophy on Rainy Wedding Days

Rain sucks. It’s not what anyone wants on their wedding day, but if you can make adjustments on the fly and work with an experienced photographer, you can get some incredibly breathtaking moments. Embracing the rain and working with it can turn a potential setback into a series of magical memories.

As a wedding photographer in Indianapolis and the surrounding areas, I’ve come to appreciate the unique charm that rain brings to a wedding day. It forces couples and their guests to be flexible and in the moment, often leading to unexpected and heartwarming experiences. Plus, there’s something undeniably romantic about snuggling under an umbrella with the love of your life while raindrops fall around you.
