When couples think about iconic locations in downtown Indianapolis, the canal at White River State Park often tops the list (and it's one of our most favorite places to for photo shoots in Indianapolis). Its mix of water views, tree-lined paths, bridges, and skyline backdrops makes it one of the most versatile and romantic spots for engagement photos. As an Indianapolis engagement photographer who has captured dozens of sessions here, I’ve learned exactly what makes the canal shine — and how you can plan the perfect session.

Recently, I had the joy of photographing Ashley & Greg’s Indianapolis canal engagement session. They even brought their dogs for part of it! Their session is the perfect example of how to make the most of this downtown gem.
Why Choose the Canal for Your Engagement Session?

The canal isn’t just a pretty location — it’s dynamic and offers variety in a single walk. You’ll find shaded spots with greenery, reflective water views, modern architecture, and open skies perfect for sunset.

For Ashley & Greg, we started by strolling the paths near the water. The dogs joined us for the beginning, adding personality and warmth to their gallery. After the pups went home with a handler, we continued exploring, including stops behind the Indiana State House and the back patio of the Indiana State Museum. Each location offered something different but kept the session cohesive.
Best Time of Day for Canal Engagement Photos

Golden Hour Magic
If you want the soft, glowing light that makes skin tones look dreamy and backgrounds vibrant, schedule your session for golden hour — the hour before sunset. Ashley & Greg planned theirs for late September, and the timing couldn’t have been better.
Behind the Indiana State House, we stumbled upon a steam vent catching the golden sunlight. It created a cinematic effect, adding drama and uniqueness to their gallery. These kinds of happy accidents happen most often when you give yourself the best light of the day.

Morning Sessions as an Alternative
Not a fan of crowds? Early morning can be just as beautiful. The canal is quieter at sunrise, giving you more privacy for those candid, intimate moments.
Best Season for an Indianapolis Canal Engagement Session

Spring & Summer
The canal comes alive with bright greens, flowers, and activity. If you love vibrant, fresh backdrops, April through August is ideal. Just plan for earlier or later times of day to avoid harsh midday sun.
Fall (Ashley & Greg’s Session)
Late September through October brings crisp air, golden leaves, and warm tones that photograph beautifully. Ashley’s white dress paired perfectly with Greg’s blue suit against the fall backdrop.
Winter
Winter can be quiet and romantic on the canal. Bare trees and dramatic skies create a minimalist vibe. If you want a cozy aesthetic, bundle up in layers or bring a blanket to incorporate into your session.
What to Wear for Your Canal Engagement Session

Your outfits should reflect your style while also complementing the environment.
Dress it up: Ashley wore a short, form-fitting white dress while Greg chose a tailored blue suit with an open-collared shirt. Their polished looks elevated the session and matched the elegance of the downtown backdrop.
Bring options: Many couples choose two outfits — one formal and one casual. This gives your gallery variety and lets you showcase different sides of your personality.
Coordinate, don’t match: Choose colors that complement each other rather than identical tones.
Think about movement: Fabrics that flow (like dresses) or fitted tailoring (like suits) look incredible in photos.
Should You Bring Your Pets?

Absolutely — but with a plan. Ashley & Greg brought their two dogs, and we included them at the very beginning of the session. This way, they could shine in the photos without getting restless. Afterward, a handler took them home while we continued exploring.
Pro Tip: Bring a trusted friend or family member to take care of your pets after their part is done. Pack treats, a favorite toy, and a lint roller just in case.
Bonus Locations Near the Canal

One of the best parts about choosing the canal is the easy access to other incredible Indianapolis landmarks:
Behind the Indiana State House – Beautiful architecture, columns, and occasionally, magical light effects (like Ashley & Greg’s steam-shot moment).
Indiana State Museum Patio – A tucked-away gem with clean lines, open skies, and perfect sunset lighting.
White River State Park Gardens & Bridges – Natural elements combined with urban backdrops.
