Some weddings are beautiful.
Some weddings are emotional.
And every once in a while, a wedding comes along that somehow manages to hold joy, grief, celebration, family legacy, romance, and remembrance all at the exact same time.
Erica & Tanner’s wedding day on May 8th, 2026, was one of those weddings.
Originally, Erica had reached out to me in late February to schedule engagement photos at the Indiana State House in May. We officially planned their session for May 14th, with the intention of documenting this exciting new season of life together in one of our favorite downtown Indianapolis engagement locations. Then on March 20th, everything unexpectedly changed when Erica’s father, Rex, passed away.
A few weeks later, on April 17th, Erica reached back out asking if we happened to be available on May 8th — her parents’ 55th wedding anniversary — because the two had decided they no longer wanted to take engagement photos after what would have originally been their wedding date. Instead, they had made the decision to completely reimagine their plans and host a full wedding celebration at her childhood home in Fort Wayne. A few weeks later, we would still end up documenting their Indiana State House engagement session in downtown Indianapolis, which became an important part of preserving this season of life for the two of them during such an emotional transition.

She was understandably disappointed when she initially saw that our calendar appeared unavailable for her wedding day (more on that later), but after talking through their vision together, it became immediately clear this was no longer simply about an engagement session or Indiana State House elopement.
This was going to become something far more intentional: a deeply emotional celebration of family, legacy, love, and remembrance — all unfolding in the very place Erica had grown up.
And somehow, in only four weeks, what could have felt rushed or overwhelming instead became one of the most intentional, emotional, and beautifully executed private property weddings we’ve ever photographed.
An Indianapolis Wedding Photographer’s Perspective on Intentional Private Property Weddings

Some of our favorite weddings are the ones that blend emotional storytelling with an elevated guest experience — celebrations where the design, atmosphere, and intentional details all work together to create something deeply personal rather than simply extravagant. That balance is something we also loved documenting during this luxury wedding experience at Laurel Hall in Indianapolis.
One of the very first things Erica told us was:
“I don’t want this to feel like a backyard barbecue wedding.”
And honestly, that distinction mattered.
There’s a huge difference between:
throwing together a wedding in a backyard
and
intentionally designing a luxury private property wedding experience.
Erica wanted the day to feel:
elevated
romantic
purposeful
emotional
and deeply connected to family.
With only four weeks to bring everything together, it became immediately clear that this wasn’t simply about photography anymore. This was a full-scale luxury tent wedding that needed the right team behind it.
That’s where Amanda with Magical Moments Event Planning became such an important part of the story.
From the incredible reception design and rentals to the emotional pacing of the day itself, having the right creative team made all the difference. Amanda with Magical Moments Event Planning, the team at Mutton Rentals, the florals from Black Creek Ridge, live music by Blue Water Kings Band, and catering from Club Soda Catering all helped transform Erica & Tanner’s family property into a wedding experience that felt both elevated and deeply personal.

As an Indianapolis wedding photographer, one of the biggest things experience teaches you is recognizing when a couple needs more than just beautiful photos — they need a team capable of protecting the experience of the day itself.
And private property weddings are far more logistically complicated than most couples realize.
On paper, backyard weddings can seem simpler or more relaxed. But in reality, they often require:
tenting
power
catering logistics
weather backup plans
rentals
parking coordination
lighting design
timeline management
transportation
and multiple contingency plans.

The difference between a private property wedding feeling stressful versus luxurious almost always comes down to having experienced professionals guiding the process.
And Amanda absolutely helped make that happen here.
We’ve seen firsthand just how beautiful and emotional these celebrations can become when they’re planned intentionally. Another one of our favorite examples was Erin & Joseph’s intimate backyard wedding celebration in Bloomington, where thoughtful planning and meaningful personal details completely transformed a private property into an unforgettable wedding experience.
The Chandelier That Changed Everything

One of the most emotional details from the entire wedding day hung directly over the center of the reception tent.
Originally, Erica had envisioned a large gold chandelier to anchor the reception design. Rental companies were explored, but nothing quite fit the look they wanted — either visually or financially.
Then Tanner found something unexpected.
Hidden away in the corner of the barn that housed Rex’s car collection sat a massive chandelier that had apparently been forgotten for years after Rex had rescued it from a ditch long ago.
An electrician was brought in.
It worked perfectly.

And by wedding day, that chandelier hung glowing over the center of the reception space like it had always belonged there.
It’s hard to explain the emotional weight that detail carried throughout the day.
Not because it was extravagant.
But because it felt like Rex was still there somehow — quietly watching over the celebration he never got to physically attend.
Later in the evening, underneath that same chandelier, Erica and her mother completed what was originally supposed to be Erica and Rex’s father-daughter dance together.
There honestly wasn’t a dry eye in the tent.
Why This Wedding Felt Different Than Any Other

Over the course of 450+ weddings, one thing we’ve learned is that wedding days are rarely about just one emotion.
But this wedding carried emotions in layers.
Guests weren’t only celebrating Erica & Tanner.
They were also:
celebrating Rex and Erica’s mom’s 55th anniversary
celebrating a ninth birthday in the family
mourning a father
remembering a grandfather
grieving a friend
honoring someone deeply loved.
You could feel it throughout the day in subtle ways.
Hugs lingered longer.
People walked through the car collection quietly taking things in.
Conversations slowed down around certain memories.
Guests paused in moments instead of rushing through them.
As a documentary wedding photographer, those are the moments you notice most — the moments where people aren’t performing emotion, but simply living inside it.
And honestly, that emotional honesty is what made this wedding feel so powerful.
Rain, Timelines, and Why First Looks Matter More Than Couples Realize

As the wedding week approached, weather forecasts became increasingly concerning.
By wedding morning, rain chances sat above 90% for most of the day.
The original ceremony plan was supposed to happen outside near a newly remodeled patio that Rex and Erica had completed together before he passed. But as timelines shifted and radar updates continued rolling in, it became clear that flexibility was going to be critical.
When I arrived early that morning, I sat down with Erica and asked a question that would ultimately shape the rest of the day:
“Would you consider doing a first look?”
Originally, the couple hadn’t planned on seeing each other before the ceremony. But because portraits with Rex’s cars were so important to Erica, we knew we had a narrow weather window available earlier in the day.
I don’t even think I finished the sentence before she said yes.
And honestly? That decision changed everything.

Their first look happened on a small bridge crossing a water feature in front of the home Erica grew up in — a bridge she had likely crossed hundreds of times throughout her childhood.
Only now, she crossed it to see her future husband waiting for her.
It was emotional.
Intentional.
And deeply connected to the property itself.
But one of the most beautiful parts came later.
Even after seeing each other during the first look, Erica had secretly recorded a message for Tanner to hear just before the ceremony began.
Over 450 weddings later, that was genuinely a first for us.
And when Tanner heard her voice before she walked down the aisle, you could physically see the emotion hit him all over again.

That moment reinforced something we tell couples often:
A first look doesn’t take away emotion from your wedding day.
In fact, some of the most emotional wedding moments we’ve ever documented have happened because couples chose to do a first look. Having that additional flexibility in the timeline often allows couples to fully enjoy cocktail hour, spend more intentional time with guests, and avoid feeling rushed later in the evening — especially during emotionally layered wedding days like this one.
If anything, it allows you to:
slow down
be more present
protect your timeline
and spend more intentional time with your people afterward instead of worrying about photos all day long.
The Ceremony Moved Into the Barn — And Somehow Became Even More Meaningful

As light rain began moving in, the ceremony location shifted indoors into the barn housing Rex’s car collection.
And honestly?
It felt exactly right.
As someone who deeply loves both storytelling and cars myself, there was something incredibly moving about watching Erica & Tanner exchange vows surrounded by the very things her father spent years restoring, protecting, and loving.
The cars stopped feeling like details or props.
They became part of the story itself.

Especially the black 1958 Corvette — the final car Rex had been working on before he passed — which became the centerpiece for many of Erica & Tanner’s portraits throughout the day.
Tanner even chose his own favorite vehicle from the collection for photos: a classic Chevrolet C10 pickup truck.

Every vehicle carried emotional meaning.
And guests naturally wandered through the barn throughout the evening, quietly connecting with Rex through the collection he left behind.
The Blue Jay Pins Nobody Saw — But Everyone Felt

One of the quietest details from the day ended up becoming one of the most meaningful.
During cocktails at Erica & Tanner’s engagement session in Indianapolis, the two mentioned that one of Rex’s favorite things was watching wildlife around the property. Since his passing, they had noticed blue jays appearing around the house constantly.
That stuck with us.
Before wedding day, Amanda and I coordinated six small blue jay pins:
one for Erica’s bouquet
one for Tanner
one for Amanda
one for Amanda’s assistant Chloe
one for myself
and one extra pin originally intended for Erica’s mom.
But by the end of the evening, that final pin never actually made it onto anyone.
Instead, it was intentionally left behind on the property itself — a quiet way of ensuring that a small piece of Rex remained at home, still part of the place and people he loved most.
Most guests likely never noticed the pins.
But that was never really the point.
They existed simply as quiet reminders that Rex’s presence was still woven into every part of the celebration.
Why We Still Snuck Away for Sunset Photos

Recently, a lot of couples have started skipping sunset portraits altogether.
And honestly, we completely understand why.
People want to:
be at cocktail hour
enjoy their reception
dance with their friends
and stay present with their guests.
But sunset photos don’t have to mean disappearing for 45 minutes.
When a small weather window opened later in the evening, we quickly moved Tanner’s favorite C10 truck into position ahead of time so everything was fully ready before pulling the couple away.
The result?
Ten minutes.
That’s it.
And somehow after an entire day of rain forecasts, muddy ground, and shifting plans, we ended up with the exact sunset they had hoped for all along.
Even better?

Erica never once hesitated about the mud, her heels, or her dress getting dirty.
She simply lived in the moment.
And honestly, that mindset changes everything photographically.
Because wedding dresses aren’t meant to stay perfectly untouched forever.
They’re meant to be lived in. - Quote me on that.

And years from now, these photos won’t remind Erica & Tanner of rain forecasts or muddy grass.
They’ll remember:
the sunset
the truck
the laughter
and the feeling that after everything, the day still somehow unfolded exactly the way it was supposed to.
Planning a Private Property Wedding in Indiana?

That’s also why we always encourage couples considering private property weddings in Indiana to build a trusted vendor team early — especially planners and professionals experienced in handling weather backup plans, rentals, logistics, lighting, and guest flow for nontraditional wedding spaces.
We’re also seeing more couples intentionally move toward smaller, emotionally intentional wedding days where the focus shifts away from production and more toward connection, experience, and the people surrounding them. Whether that looks like a private property wedding, an intimate backyard celebration, or a downtown Indianapolis elopement, those types of wedding days continue to become some of our absolute favorites to document.
If you’re considering:
a private property wedding
an intimate estate wedding
a luxury tent wedding
or a smaller, emotionally intentional wedding day in Indiana
…the biggest advice we can give is simple:
Hire experienced professionals.
Backyard weddings are not automatically easier.
In many cases, they’re significantly more complex than traditional venues because every single logistical piece has to be intentionally built from the ground up.
But when done well?
They can become some of the most meaningful wedding days imaginable.
And Erica & Tanner’s wedding was proof of exactly that.
